DOE Award for Occupancy-Based HVAC Control Solution

Prof. Bergés and Anthony Rowe (ECE) received a major U.S. Department of Energy grant for a project aimed at improving the efficiency of our nation’s buildings. Along with Stoney Brook University and the Bosch Research and Technology Center in Pittsburgh, the duo will develop a depth-sensing based occupancy estimation solution, and a model-predictive controller that can improve energy use while optimizing occupant comfort. Current HVAC systems waste energy by assuming maximum occupancy in each room and being driven by schedule-based controls.
